Understanding all of your options when it comes to insurance, liability and security bonds when hiring a motorhome in New Zealand is important. This page is a summary of each motorhome Companies Liability (deductible) and options to reduce it.
Standard Liability
Standard Liability is the amount you will be liable to pay in the event of an accident or damage to the vehicle, regardless of who is at fault. The liability applies in respect of each claim, not rental. If no reduction option is taken the full amount is charged on pickup of vehicle (Bond)
Liability Reduction Options (LRO)
The good news is that you can reduce your risk by doing one of the following:
- Opting for the Stress Free Package at any time prior to pickup. This package has the lowest level of liability and is great value with various bonus items such as baby seats, chairs, tables, etc
- At the time of pick up by choosing one of the Liability Reduction Options (LRO)

Standard Liability
The RV is insured for damage to it and damage to the property of a third party. However, the guest is responsible up to the amount of the applicable liability for damage to third party property, or to the RV. The guest is also responsible for the cost of the daily rate for the period the vehicle is being repaired. There is no refund for unused portion of the rental period. The Liability applies to each claim, not RV.
The liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident is reported to Apollo by telephone on a credit card, not on return of the RV. Apollo reserves the right to charge the guest for any RV damage including Third Party property damage not reported but identified on return of the RV.
LRO (High Road)
Payable at the branch when you pick up, this will reduce your liability to the amount shown above.
Value Pack - Stress Free
The Value Pack is a bundled extra which provides the highest liability cover option and basic items necessary for a great road trip. The minimum amount payable per rental for Value Pack is the five-day minimum booking period. The maximum amount payable per rental segment is 50 days.
Includes - ‘The High Road’, unlimited windscreen and tyres, undercarriage/overhead damage (covered for accidental damage), initial set of toilet chemicals, camp chairs and table, and baby/booster seats (with prior request) and Single Vehicle Rollover

- If the insurance excess waiver option is taken, it is valid for the first incident or accident only.
- *The liability is capped but all insurance is waived if the vehicle is being driven in a manner which is outside the agreed terms of our contract e.g. Drunk driving, negligence leading to loss etc. In such instances, the hirers can be held liable for all costs associated with any accident or loss.
- ‘Vehicle Roll’ Clause. All insurance is waived/void if a van has been rolled in a single vehicle incident (side, roof or chassis damage). I.e. Hirer is fully liable for all costs irrespective of insurance option taken if van has been rolled.
- Single Vehicle Incident liability is an additional $1,000 ($4,000 total)
- Credit Card imprint only held for the purpose of fines incurred (plus admin fees).

Single Vehicle Rollover:
Where the Vehicle is involved in a single vehicle roll over or the roof of the Vehicle is damaged as a result of any single vehicle incident or accident the Hirer is liable for costs of up to $5000.
$300 bond for customers using debit cards that are on Stress Free and Stress Free Plus.
Jucy will hold $300 as a security bond to cover any infringements or charges that may occur whilst on hire e.g. Tolls, speeding fines, cleaning fees, camping fines, late returns etc.$300 security bond is pre-authorised on the debit card at the time of pickup and released 10 (working) days after the authorization date.

The hirer is fully liable for any and all damages or costs when The hirer is involved in a single vehicle rollover. This includes, but is not limited to, a vehicle that has rolled, tipped, or fallen over on its side. This full liability also applies to driving on unsealed or gravel roads.
On the Fence (Liability reduction)
Payable at the branch when you pick up, this will reduce your liability to the amount shown above.
Sure thing (Full cover)
Includes Liability & Bond reduction to $0, one complete windscreen and multiple chips, multiple tyre replacement.
Worry Free Cover (Full cover plus extras)
Must be added before pickup and is prepaid this includes:

The hirer is responsible for the first $7500.00 of the cost of damaged windscreen & tyres. Where a NIL liability is present unlimited windscreen and tyres will be covered for accidental damage.

Standard Liability
The Hirer’s liability will be for any loss or damage to the Vehicle, however caused, and for any consequential loss or damage, during the term of this hire, or during any authorized extensions to the term, up to the applicable excess amount of NZD 7500 per incident. The Hirer is liable for the the applicable insurance excess in the case of damage to, or accidents involving the Vehicle when the Hirer has not taken liability reduction insurance. On payment of the liability reduction insurance by the Hirer, the excess payable by the Hirer is reduced or eliminated depending on the liability reduction option selected and subject to exclusions. The Rental Company may make the applicable deduction from the Hirer’s credit card following notification of any loss or damage to the Vehicle. The liability applies in respect of each claim, not rental.
Stress Free Package (Liability Reduction to $0)
The Stress Free Package includes LRO to $0, RUC, Camping Table, Camping Chairs for all pax, Wifi included. If required, also includes child seats.

Standard Liability
All Pacific Horizon motorhomes come with comprehensive Insurance cover which insures against recoverable 3rd party accident damage, theft and break-ins (excluding personal belongings).
An excess of NZD$5,000 (per incident) applies in the event of any damage to either the Pacific Horizon motorhome or to 3rd party property.
Windscreen and tyre damage is covered in all policies, as is overhead and under-body damage on the rented motorhome. A credit card imprint only (no money held or transferred) will be taken on motorhome pick-up. The amount will NOT be debited to your account and will only be done so in case of an accident.
We retain the right to hold these details for 30 days after the hire.
Excess Reduction Level 1: $35 per day (added to the daily hire rate)
Reduces the excess for any damage to either the motorhome or third party property to a maximum of NZ$2,000 (per incident). The total insurance charge is limited to a maximum of 40 days or NZ$1,400.
Excess Reduction Level 2: $50 per day (added to the daily hire rate)

Standard Liability

Maximum collectible means the total maximum cost for selecting a particular insurance option.
Standard Liability
The hirer is responsible for the first NZ$7,500 of ANY ACCIDENT COST of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident (does not include single vehicle roll over), windscreen and tyre damage, overhead and underbody damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break in or vandalism. This is applicable regardless if the hirer has purchased private travel insurance.
The liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of the rental. The liability will be refunded if Star is successful in recovering the cost of the damages from the Third Party. Please note that Third Party claims can take months to resolve.
The Standard Liability can be reduced by purchasing one of the following Reduction Options:

If an excess reduction option has been chosen ($0 liability) a credit card imprint of the hirer’s credit card will be taken as security in case of any breach of the Terms & Conditions. No amounts will be taken using the credit card imprint unless there is a breach of the Terms & Conditions or Rental Agreement.
*A Single Vehicle Rollover may include, but is not limited to a Vehicle that has rolled, tipped or fallen over and has caused damage to side and/or roof area of the Vehicle.
*Additional Coverages
Windscreen Waiver: With the purchase of the windscreen waiver, the hirer is not responsible to pay in the event that the windscreen needs to be replaced (first windscreen only and side & rear windows are excluded). All vehicles = $4.50/day up to maximum $112.50

Tyre Waiver:With purchase of the tyre waiver, the renter is not responsible to pay in the event that tyres need to be replaced (up to max of two tyres per rental). All vehicles = $4.50/day up to maximum of $112.50 payable
Please note: Personal items are not covered under vehicle damage protection cover. We recommend you do not leave your valuables in your vehicle because of possible theft. We strongly recommend that all hirers take out their own premium travel insurance.

The guest is also responsible for the cost of the daily rate for the period the vehicle is being repaired. There is no refund for unused portion of the rental period. The liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident is reported to hippie by telephone on a credit card, not on return of the RV. Hippie reserves the right to charge the guest for any RV damage including Third Party property damage not reported but identified on return of the RV.

The Value Pack is a bundled extra which provides the highest liability cover option and basic items necessary for a great road trip. The minimum amount payable per rental for Value Pack is the five-day minimum booking period.

Security Bonds
All branches take a security bond at the beginning of the rental. The amount of this bond is dependent on if you take out Liability Reduction and which option you take. Please be aware that there is a credit card surcharge of between 1.75% and 5% on the amount paid on pick up, including the refundable bond.
Travel Insurance
Even if you do reduce your liability we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance before you leave home, for total peace of mind. Insurance policies cover cancellation fees, medical expenses, baggage and much more.
